ABB Wins $17-Million Excitation Systems Order from the Bureau of Reclamation

ABB Power Electronics to support extensive plant rehabilitation with state-of-the-art excitation equipment

MONTREAL, May 4 -- ABB, a power and automation technology group, has been awarded an order to supply six UNITROL(R) 6800 static excitation systems for the Third Power Plant at Grand Coulee Dam located on the Columbia River in Washington State.

The UNITROL(R) 6800 is the latest and most powerful generation of static excitation systems, based on AC 800PEC control platform. The units are scheduled to be delivered in 2011 through to 2013 respectively.

ABB's scope includes designing, manufacturing, installation and testing the six water cooled static excitation systems complete with water cooled power potential transformers, HV and LV bus as well as the removal of existing equipment.

Excitation systems regulate the voltage and reactive power output of a generator. This crucial element in power generation is required for system stability and power network stability.
