Washington State electricity cooperative Snohomish County Public Utility District (SnoPUD) is now using Siemens’ Gridscale X Meter Data Management System (MDMS) along with project partner TRC Companies.

The deployment will enable fast deployment, less reliance on staff for infrastructure management and enhanced support.

After a needs evaluation, SnoPUD selected TRC’s cloud services built on AWS to ensure seamless scalability. This was crucial as the number of smart meters and data collection frequency increased, requiring an elastic infrastructure that could adapt to growing demands without major hardware investments.

“We wanted to stay current with all the business requirements driving our Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) investment,” said Marc Rosson, SnoPUD Enterprise Architect.” To do that, you must have the skills to support the database, operating system and software products. A managed-service cloud checked all those boxes.”

TRC’s services included integrating and implementing the Gridscale X MDMS system, setting up and managing cloud infrastructure, providing ongoing support and maintenance and offering 24/7 monitoring and alerting. They also implemented robust data security measures, such as monitoring events and anomalies and routine security patching to ensure sensitive information is protected without additional IT upgrades. The cloud infrastructure supports automated backups and disaster recovery options, minimizing data loss risks.

“TRC has consistently demonstrated flexibility and professionalism, accommodating change requests beyond initial scope limitations,” said Adam Peretti, AMI Technology Manager at SnoPUD. “They have worked closely with us to determine the best way forward for the PUD and taking best practices that can help other utilities as well.”

Adopting TRC’s cloud-based MDMS solution enables the utility to deliver the advantages of its AMI investment more rapidly to customers, as IT staff are no longer burdened with managing the application and its infrastructure. The solution provides the flexibility and support needed to sustain AMI excellence while remaining adaptable to change.
