Feeder IED Aligned for Protection, Control of Substations

Jan. 28, 2014
REF615R is a dedicated feeder IED aligned for the protection, control, measurement and supervision of utility substations and industrial power systems, providing customers with a 19-inch rack mount feeder protection relay as well as an upgrade of the DPU2000R relay

ABB has released its Relion REF615R feeder IED. The REF615R was designed to offer an easy, quick and affordable way to upgrade ABB’s DPU2000R relay along with providing a 19-inch rack mount version of the REF615 feeder IED.

The REF615R is a member of the ABB Relion product family and part of its 615 protection and control series. Engineered from the ground up, the 615 series has been designed to unleash the potential of the IEC 61850 standard for communication and interoperability of substation automation devices while also supporting the industry-standard DNP3.0 and Modbus protocols. This provides users a future-proof capability of starting with DNP3 and later on switching over to IEC 61850. Customers not yet wanting to use the IEC 61850 have the opportunity to do so in the future with no additional cost in hardware. The new product contains the functionality of REF615, as well as features utilizing some of the latest technologies available today.

There are four major ease-of-replacement benefits for ANSI and IEC DPU2000R users:

  • Same form and fit eliminates panel cutting or rack repositioning
  • Wire-alike I/O and CT/VT connections greatly reduce drawing modification time
  • Comparable protection and control plus more included
  • Near SCADA-alike for DNP3.0 points and Modbus registers

The REF615R feeder protection and control relay offers non-directional and directional phase and ground overcurrent, voltage and frequency protection, flexible multi-shot auto-reclose control, synch check, power system metering, advanced local human machine interface (LHMI) and embedded web-server for ease of data retrieval and setting. The relay also offers optional sensitive earth fault (SEF) protection, power quality, arc flash detection and cable fault detection (CFD) for detecting incipient cable faults.

This announcement was made at the DistribuTech conference and exhibition, held this year at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center. ABB is exhibiting on the DistribuTech show floor in booth # 1638.
