SEL Adds Six More Products to the IEC 61850 Family

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. has announced that six more products are now available from SEL with IEC 61850-compliant communications, including three new transformer monitoring and protection devices:

• SEL-2414 Transformer Monitor, the first transformer monitor to include IEC 61850 communications
• SEL-787 Transformer Protection Relay
• SEL-487E Transformer Protection Relay

SEL added IEC 61850 options to three existing products:

• SEL-2411 Programmable Automation Controller
• SEL-751A Feeder Protection Relay
• SEL-710 Motor Protection Relay

These devices join seven other SEL IEC 61850 products that now include programmable automation controllers, computing platforms, transformer monitors, bay controllers, and relays that protect transmission lines, distribution feeders, buses, motors, and transformers. Versatile ACSELERATOR Architect SEL-5032 Software streamlines configuration tasks. The IEC 61850 standard defines protocols, architecture, and configuration methods for integrating substation control systems using devices from multiple suppliers. An SEL technical paper, "Applying IEC 61850 to Real Life: Modernization Project for 30 Electrical Substations," reports that for Elektro Eletricidade e Serviços S.A., Brazil, standardization of schemes using IEC 61850 and thorough laboratory testing "…reduce the automation system commissioning time by 40 percent for each substation."
