Industry icon Bill McDermid will be a principal speaker at OMICRON’s Partial Discharge Workshop on July 12-14, 2016.  The Manitoba Hydro High Voltage Test Facility will form the backdrop for the workshop, providing hands-on testing for participants.

McDermid is the ideal presenter for this workshop, having gotten his start in diagnostic testing in the 1960s. It was at the outset of a period of major expansion at Manitoba Hydro when he moved from protective relaying to diagnostic testing of electrical insulation as applied to most types of electrical apparatus. Manitoba Hydro was adding five hydro-generating stations and two HVDC bipoles at the time.

McDermid is now Technical Director of Manitoba Hydro’s High Voltage Test Facility, recently commissioned, for equipment rated up to 550 kVAC and 500 kVDC. In fact, he said the best thing about his job has been being involved in the commercialization of Manitoba Hydro’s High Voltage Test Facility.

“A significant part of my work experience has related to diagnostic testing of rotating machine insulation,” McDermid said. “When I was elected IEEE Fellow in 2005 the citation read ‘For contributions to the development of rotating machine insulation testing.’”

The workshop will introduce the basics of partial discharge, the applications and the various advanced measurement techniques. Participants will acquire knowledge on PD measurements on various high voltage apparatus such as power transformers, rotating machines, and cables and become familiar with the possibilities and limitations of partial discharge measurements and their analysis of different test objects.

“Students will learn how to best avoid the cost of forced outages of large rotating machines,” McDermid said.

He presented at a previous OMICRON PD Workshop in 2014 and has been a regular contributor at conferences on electrical insulation since the late 1960s. McDermid often tells students to determine the real objective and don’t blindly apply tests, which could be destructive.

The PD workshop is geared especially for testing laboratory technicians, plant electrical engineers, facility managers, high voltage engineers, equipment manufacturers, consultants, product development engineers, asset management engineers, and power grid maintenance engineers.
