Poll: Will Tariffs Affect Electric Utilities?

April 15, 2025
Tell us how you think trade tariffs will affect the power delivery industry, if at all.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced new tariffs several times within the past few months, but here is where we stand today (April 11):

  • Base global tariffs: Trump is maintaining the 10% base global tariff announced April 2
  • China tariffs: Trump raised the reciprocal tariff on China to 125% tariff, in addition to a 20% tariff.
  • Blanket steel and aluminum tariffs: 25%, which went into effect March 12.
  • Auto and auto parts: 25%, which went into effect April 2.

Many utilities rely on imported materials for infrastructure projects, from transformers and conductors to solar panels and battery systems. Tariffs could drive up the cost of critical grid modernization efforts, renewable energy investments, and everyday maintenance work. On the flip side, some argue that tariffs might spur domestic manufacturing, ultimately strengthening U.S. supply chains and boosting grid resilience.

So what do you think? Cast your vote in the poll below—and feel free to share why you voted the way you did in the comments. Your insights could help illuminate what’s ahead for our industry.
