Endesa to Use IP TETRA to Automatically Transmit Data for Distribution Monitoring

Endesa has chosen Motorola, Inc. to supply a TETRA communications network. The network will be operational before the end of 2007 and could be expanded into other geographical areas.

Endesa manages a power distribution network spanning 100,000 km of high-voltage power lines, and Motorola’s Dimetra IP Compact system will support the automatic detection and prediction of power disruptions in Spain’s Catalonia region. The supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) remote monitoring system supported by the Motorola TETRA network is critical to ensuring ongoing electricity service.

Endesa is the most important utility in Spain and South America and has the best solutions in to telecontrol the network, introducing innovative devices in a new concept to achieve a real intelligent grid.

Working together with Amper Sistemas, Endesa reviewed many solutions, and TETRA was selected as it offered the best availability, security and future-proofing for Endesa’s machine-to-machine communications.

In addition the data capability of TETRA supports the real-time monitoring of Endesa’s distribution network, which enables the company to adopt the latest IEC protocols for telemetry.

The Motorola TETRA system replaces an analogue PMR network operating in radio spectrum reserved for utilities; a solution that was deemed unable to meet current and future needs. The existing solution also requires separate radio bases for voice and data, whereas Motorola’s Dimetra IP Compact TETRA delivers an integrated voice and data network.
