Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) has released the SEL-2886 EIA-232 to EIA-485 interface converter. The converter meets many different EIA-485 connection requirements. The SEL-2886 is compatible with four-wire and two-wire networks, at data rates up to 115,200 bits per second, over an operating temperature range of –40 to +85°C.

In multidrop EIA-485 networks, only one remote device can transmit at a time; the SEL-2886 provides a variety of methods to key the transmitter on and off that you select with control (DIP) switches.

When connected to SEL serial ports, provide power through Pin 1 of the connector; with other devices, provide power through a power jack.

Example applications include:

  • Connect the EIA-485 port of an SEL relay to an SEL communications processor, rugged computer, SEL-2100 Logic Processor, or laptop computer.
  • Provide engineering access from a laptop computer via a USB port and the EIA-485 port of a relay or other device by connecting an SEL-C663 USB to Serial Port Cable to the USB port on the computer and to an SEL-2886.
  • Attach an SEL communications processor, relay, rugged computer, or other EIA-232 serial port to a multidrop EIA-485 network.
