Sensus Launches Stratus Electric Meter Portfolio

Aug. 13, 2015
With new metering technology from Sensus, they can capture and analyze the data that provides intelligence at the edge of their systems for efficiency and responsiveness.

Electric utilities and municipalities play an important role in leveraging the Internet of Things (IoT) to balance supply and demand, restore service faster following outages and encourage consumers to conserve electricity. With new metering technology from Sensus, they can capture and analyze the data that provides intelligence at the edge of their systems for efficiency and responsiveness.

The Sensus Stratus residential meter delivers more data to ensure the safe, accurate and reliable management of the electric grid. Combined with true two-way communications on the Sensus FlexNet network, utilities and municipalities can instantly configure, upgrade and customize the meter's electricity management platform.

One way the meter helps utilities be more efficient is through the conservation voltage reduction (CVR) application. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, up to 67 percent of energy used to create electricity is wasted by the time the consumer uses the electricity. CVR improves the efficiency of the grid by optimizing voltage on the feeder lines that run from substations to homes and businesses.

“Delivering voltages at optimal levels reduces consumption, improves service quality and extends the life of equipment. Utilities and consumers can save energy and lower operating costs with our CVR-enabled electric meter,” said Myers.

Some of the meter safety features that exceed industry standards include a redesigned power supply for increased over-voltage protection and better transient performance, isolated components and patented and patent-pending heat identification and protection. Specifically, the meter provides patented, local intelligence to autonomously and remotely open the disconnect switch so the meter can safely shut off if an issue is detected.

Utilities select certain smart meters as representative—or bellwether—meters in their service area that allows them to continuously monitor the health of the system, proactively solve problems and predict energy demand.

The new Stratus meter is available in form 2S Remote Disconnect and supports multiple applications including outage management, opt-in, opt-out and conservation voltage reduction. Other meter forms will be available in the future.

The Sensus FlexNet system is a long-range radio network that provides a scalable and reliable communications infrastructure with dedicated channels that can be prioritized for outage and restoration data to increase reliability. The range of the point-to-multi-point network supports multiple applications that increase operational efficiency and customer engagement with fewer of access points required to capture and transmit data.
