Sensor and Software Platform Offers Continuous Visibility into T&D Lines

Line-mounted sensors capture more than 40 electrical, physical, and environmental parameters at each location.

Electrical Grid Monitoring (EGM) offers a sensor and software platform, Meta-Alert, that gives utilities continuous visibility into transmission and distribution lines. Line-mounted sensors capture more than 40 electrical, physical, and environmental parameters at each location, including voltage, current, fault current signatures, conductor temperature, and wind speed. The hardware is self-powered, rated for continuous outdoor use from -40°F to 150°F, and communicates over 900 MHz wireless with a range of up to 2.5 miles.

On distribution lines, EGM's approach follows a detect, locate, and prevent structure. Sensors detect abnormal electrical activity in real time, and the platform's Accurate Fault Location and Detection (AFLD) function locates faults to within a single pole span, about 300 feet, shortening fault response from several hours of line patrol to roughly one hour from alarm to repair. Over time, the same sensor data supports prevention by flagging conditions associated with asset degradation, vegetation encroachment, wildfire risk, and power quality issues before they lead to outages.

On transmission lines, EGM's Dynamic Line Rating module calculates a line's real-time thermal capacity using live conductor and environmental readings instead of static engineering assumptions. EGM reports up to a 50 percent increase in usable line capacity compared to static ratings in field deployments.

Across both distribution and transmission, sensors install directly on energized lines without an outage or field calibration and are operational within hours, according to the company. A typical installation uses 8 to 14 sensor clusters spanning a full power delivery chain, completed over 60 to 90 days. EGM's technology is in use with investor-owned utilities, electric cooperatives, and municipal utilities across the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East, and has been piloted at national research laboratories.
