Landis+Gyr Achieves Four Smart Meter Wins in the Netherlands

Sept. 9, 2015
Landis+Gyr awarded top tender in four Dutch networks

Landis+Gyr has been awarded a major contract by the four Dutch distribution grid operators Liander, Stedin, DELTA Netwerkbedrijf and Westland Infra for the supply and offer of 3 million smart meters in the Netherlands. The contracts, which have been signed with all four operators individually, have an option for an extension later, which could result in a higher number of smart meters delivered.

Landis+Gyr will supply both smart electricity meters and smart gas meters based on the Dutch Smart Meter SMR5 specifications to all four grid operators. The majority of the meters will be rolled out in the time period from 2016 – 2020. The project may be prolonged until the end of 2026. At the end of this project, the majority of Dutch households will be equipped with a smart electricity meter and a smart gas meter.

With this tender, the four grid operators are complying with the legal obligation to offer a smart meter to every household in the Netherlands before 2021. Moreover, the smart meters being installed will be equipped with a communications port that allows the smart meter to communicate into the home. This will enable consumers to visualize their energy consumption on an In-Home Display, or connect to a Home Energy Management System (HEMS). This functionality will give Dutch consumers the ability to have direct feed-back and control their energy consumption.

Alliander and Stedin say that the choice to launch a joint tender was taken because both parties share the same vision to organize a large scale roll-out project and the choice for CDMA 450 as their communication technology. The participation of Delta and Westland brings the total coverage to 70 percent of the Dutch networks.

In the last decade, various smart meter projects have been performed in the Netherlands. Initially as small pilots, later as bigger projects, in the past two years, the Dutch grid operators have worked together in the so called Netbeheer Nederland consortium. Together they have installed smart meters at more than 500.000 households in the Netherlands. Landis+Gyr was one of the selected suppliers for electricity and gas meters in this project.
