Hydro One Completes Upgrade to Transmission Line between Lambton and Longwood

Nov. 13, 2014
Investment strengthens reliability and provides more capacity for renewable projects.

Hydro One, Ontario, Canada, announced today that the upgrade of a transmission circuit between Lambton TS and Longwood TS is complete. The $25 million investment refurbished 36 tower foundations, replaced the circuit with a higher capacity wire and replaced insulators along the line. These upgrades strengthen the reliability of the power supply in the area and allows for approximately 500 MW of renewable generation to be connected.

"The upgrade of the transmission line in the Lambton area increases the capacity for new renewable projects while strengthening the reliability of the transmission line," said Carm Marcello, president and CEO. "Hydro One continues to make valuable investments in the transmission infrastructure that will serve the people of Ontario for many years to come."

This project used the Aluminum Conductor Steel Supported conductor for the first time in Hydro One's transmission system. This lightweight wire increases the current carrying capabilities of the transmission line without creating the need to substantially rebuild existing towers, which results in significant cost savings.

Work started on the upgrade in April 2013, following approval from the Ontario Energy Board.
