The first-ever Hawaii Lineman’s Rodeo took place on Feb. 23, 2013, at the Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii Island. The 37 three-man teams of experienced line workers along with 30 apprentices competed before 84 judges in a hurtman rescue, pole climbing as well as other simulated challenges they may face in the field.

Hawaii Island residents and island visitors watched the competition and enjoyed a day of family fun at a community fair complete with island food and entertainment. In the spirit of helping others, visitors were asked to bring donations to benefit the Big Island Food Basket and Toys for Tots. A partnership of the Hawaiian Electric utilities (Hawaiian Electric, Maui Electric and Hawaii Electric Light Co.) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1260 sponsored the event.

Once the competition ended, 75 poles were donated to the Hawaii Island Department of Parks and Recreation to enhance the park as it is returned to its original condition. For more information, please visit www.hawaiilinemanrodeo.com.
