Kentucky Power To Seek Regulatory Approval In The Fall For 161-kV Rebuild Project

July 8, 2021
The project includes rebuilding about 11 miles of 161-kV transmission line between the Wooton substation and the Stinnett substation.

American Electric Power’s Kentucky Power on July 8 said that it plans to upgrade the electric transmission system in Leslie County to enhance electric service reliability for area customers through the Wooton-Stinnett Transmission Line Rebuild Project.

The project involves rebuilding about 11 miles of 161-kV transmission line between the Wooton substation and the Stinnett substation, as well as upgrading equipment at the Wooton, Leslie, and Stinnett substations, the company said.

Crews would replace aging wooden poles dating from the 1940s with steel H-frames and lattice towers, the company said, adding that installing modern equipment and upgrading facilities reduce the need for frequent equipment maintenance and improve electric service reliability for the surrounding communities.

As noted in a project fact sheet, the typical structure height would be about 85 feet, while the typical right of way width would be about 120 feet.

The project begins at the Wooton substation located off of Wooton Creek Road in Wooton, continues south along Route 80, and connects with the Stinnett substation near Greasy Creek Road in Stinnett, the company said.

Landowners in the project area are invited to visit the project webpage to learn more about the project, enter a virtual open house, and provide feedback by Friday, July 30, the company said, adding that landowners can also expect to receive a packet in the mail that includes a comment card that they can return with their feedback.

The company said that it plans to file an application with the Kentucky Public Service Commission in the fall, and that if the project receives approval, then construction is expected to begin in spring 2023, and conclude in late 2024.
