Work has started on the upgrade of switchgear equipment in the Marrickville zone substation in Meeks Road, Marrickville, New South Wales, Australia.

Ausgrid General Manager Transmission Brett Hooper said crews were connecting additional 132-kV switchgear to support equipment that has powered 25,000 local homes and businesses since the 1970s.

“The existing equipment has performed well over the decades but it’s now due for an upgrade,” Hooper said. The new gas insulated switchgear was delivered to the site in July and will help power parts of Marrickville, Tempe and Petersham. “Specialist technicians will spend about six months installing and connecting the new equipment inside the substation building.”

The new equipment is expected to start supporting the local area’s sub-transmission network early next year.
