Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions has had its innovative Tunnel Cabling Machine (TCM) shortlisted in the technology category at the prestigious Energy Institute Awards.

Every year, the Energy Institute Awards recognize individuals and organizations in the global energy industry for setting new standards of excellence and innovation in their daily activities.

The TCM offers a completely novel way of installing high voltage electricity cables into tunnels. Previously, dozens of operatives would be needed to physically ‘pull’ the cable into position before it was lifted to the tunnel wall. The TCM can complete this operation with a team of 10, offering considerable safety improvements and time efficiencies.

The introduction of a laser-guided placement system and a smooth, continuous pulling motion also removes the human error factor from the installation process, resulting in a more consistent installation and a decreased chance of cable damage.

TCM technology has so far been deployed in both purpose-built and converted tunnel environments – the Croydon and Woodhead projects respectively – and will next year be used on the important London Tunnels project.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony on the 15th November in London.
