Burns & McDonnell has been awarded a program-management role on two Public Service Electric & Gas Company (PSE&G) upcoming projects. The company will provide coordinated management, planning and design services on behalf of PSE&G on two proposed large-scale electric transmission infrastructure improvements projects; the Southern Reinforcement Project and the Underground Transmission Initiative.
The Southern Reinforcement Project comprises 16 mi of underground 230-kV transmission lines, 9.4 mi of new 230-kV overhead transmission line, 12.4 mi of reconductored 230-kV transmission line and enhancements to three substations. The Underground Transmission Initiative consists of 6 mI of new 230-kV underground transmission line, various improvements at substation connections, as well as 14 reconductoring projects.
The Southern Reinforcement Project is in Camden and Gloucester counties in New Jersey, and the Underground Transmission Initiative is in the greater Newark area.
The two projects, designed to significantly improve long-term electric reliability in New Jersey, have a total estimated project cost of $955.5 million. Efforts by Burns & McDonnell have commenced, with construction anticipated to begin on both projects by the fourth quarter of 2012. Expected completion on the Southern Reinforcement Project is in mid-2015, and the Underground Transmission Initiative during 2016.

Burns & McDonnell has committed to nearly 12,000 sq ft of office space at Washington Plaza in Piscataway, NJ, to support the project. As many as 40 employee-owners will be utilized throughout the duration of the project, with additional support coming from the company's New England Regional Office in Wallingford, CT.
Burns & McDonnell is currently serving in a program-management role for several other large-scale infrastructure improvements projects throughout the Northeast, including Northeast Utilities' New England East-West Solution (NEEWS) project spanning Western Massachusetts and Connecticut, as well as Central Maine Power's Maine Power Reliability Program, which spans 75 communities from Eliot to Orrington, ME. The company has created more than 150 full-time jobs throughout the Northeast over the past five years.
