If you have ever wondered how technological innovation can both optimize the grid and improve reliability for customers, come tour Oncor Electric Delivery’s Technology Demonstration & Education Center (TDEC) – the most advanced micro-grid in the nation. Located just 20 minutes from downtown Dallas, the Oncor TDEC shows how maximizing distributed generation and battery storage assets improves reliability and enhances the customer experience. Nine innovative technologies – integrated and controlled by a 21st century Smart-Grid – support this 100 acre facility. The site is anchored by a 200 kW (400 kWh) Tesla battery storage system, over 100 kW of photovoltaic (PV) solar cells with south and west facing elements, and a 65 kW propane micro turbine.

Guests are guided through three areas during the tour. First, a multimedia immersion room provides a high-level overview of how Oncor is putting innovation on the grid and leading the technological change in the marketplace. This multimedia experience will also help you better understand the crucial role micro-grids can play in integrating solar and wind energy into the grid. Second, guests step into the micro-grid demonstration room, where state-of-the-art technology provides real-time monitoring and automation of distribution devices from a variety of manufacturers. Third, guests head outdoors for a live demonstration of the Tesla battery energy storage system, solar arrays, micro-turbine, and distribution equipment.

Oncor also showcases other renewable and sustainable aspects of the TDEC, such as rainwater collection and irrigation. Oncor is currently pursuing a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification for the facility.

At the same site is Oncor’s System Operations Services Facility where equipment is tested and refurbished in a controlled environment. Students will be taken around the facility in a driven tour by a guide with technical knowledge of the components.
