IRONTON, OHIO, May 2, 2008 -- The first EHV dead tank type 800kV GCB was energized at Hanging Rock Substation near Ironton, Ohio USA. Japan AE Power Systems (AE Power) was the principal designer and developer with assistance from its customer, American Electric Power (AEP). Since May, three additional units have been delivered to the same site.

AE-HVB supplied technical support and training during the installation and commissioning of the first two units. Both AE-HVB and AEP personnel received training by AE Power at Kokubu Works.

AEP previously purchased 800kV units from the only other US supplier but found the AE Power design to be superior, according to one AEP project manager.

AEP has signed a blanket agreement with AE-HVB for this product. This agreement could result in the supply of 70 more units.

One 765kV line can carry as much electricity as six 345kV single circuit lines. This makes building new 765kV lines more economical to the US electric utilities.

New 765kV transmission lines are planned through joint ventures of electric utilities including AEP in West Virginia, Maryland, Michigan, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. AE-HVB will also market this product to these joint ventures and a Northeast utility.
