February 10, 2012 -- Toward the end of January 2012, Siemens Infrastructure & Cities opened a manufacturing plant at its new location in the State of Goa, India, to produce gas-insulated medium-voltage switchgear. In the initial phase the plant is already providing employment for 120 people. The factory in India is equipped with state-of-the-art production facilities, and has an infrastructure with lean processes based on the leading quality standards of the main Siemens plant in Frankfurt. The factory will turn out switchgear for the construction and expansion of power distribution networks for utilities especially in cities, for the industry, for infrastructure projects and buildings with a huge power demand.

As the global number one manufacturer for gas-insulated medium-voltage switchgear, in the new factory in Goa Siemens assembles gas-insulated primary distribution switchgear 8DA and 8DB, gas-insulated medium-voltage ring main units 8DJH (RMUs) and compact stations for a voltage rating of up to 36 kV, mainly for the Indian market. These products are used in power distribution networks, as well as in the fast-growing wind energy industry. Since building up a reliable and safe electrical power supply is a major task fort the Indian sub-continent the market for gas-insulated switchgear is growing. Particularly increasing is the demand for a secure and reliable power supply in the fast growing megacities of India. Here, gas-insulated switchgear can be situated in power consumption centers and buildings due to their compactness. This allows for accessing the load centers with direct medium-voltage connection, thus minimizing power losses and significantly increasing the efficiency of the electrical power supply. Siemens is supporting this demand in one of the largest emerging countries in the world through its local business activity.

"Our production facility in India is a good example of how we are focusing more closely on a high degree of manufacturing competence and the further expansion of our domestic footprint. This includes greatly reinforcing the local research and development team as a part of our global R&D network", said Ralf Christian, CEO of the Low and Medium Voltage Division of the Siemens Infrastructure & Cities Sector.

Energy-efficient, eco-friendly solutions for setting up power supply networks are part of Siemens' Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2011, revenue from the portfolio totaled nearly EUR30 billion, making Siemens one of the world's largest suppliers of eco-friendly technologies. In the same period, the company's products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by nearly 320 million tons, an amount equal to the total annual CO2 emissions of Berlin, Delhi, Hong Kong, Istanbul, London, New York, Singapore and Tokyo.

The Siemens Infrastructure & Cities Sector (Munich, Germany), with approximately 87,000 employees, offers sustainable technologies for metropolitan areas and their infrastructures. Its offerings include integrated mobility solutions, building and security technology, power distribution, smart grid applications, and low- and medium-voltage products. The Sector comprises the Divisions Rail Systems, Mobility and Logistics, Low and Medium Voltage, Smart Grid, Building Technologies, and Osram AG.
