This fall, approximately 200 engineering and computer science students attended the 10th Annual Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Student Leadership Conference, sponsored by SDG&E.

The conference, themed “Future STEM Leaders, Powered by MESA,” offered professional development, networking, STEM career exposure and leadership skill building for community college and university MESA students from 30 campuses across the state.

“SDG&E is proud to sponsor an event that encourages young people to pursue careers in science and engineering,” said Scott Drury, vice president of human resources, diversity, and inclusion. “The support of employers is integral to the success of the conference. This conference not only helps students learn practical skills, but also showcases the utility industry as a desirable place for their future career.”

During the conference students participated in mock interviews, connected with industry representatives and heard from guest speakers.

The MESA Student Leadership Conference is fully sponsored by industry donations. Along with SDG&E, The California Utilities Diversity Council, Edison International, Southern California Gas Company and Pacific Gas and Electric provided generous gifts that allow students to attend.

"We know that California's economy needs more STEM workers to stay competitive," said MESA Executive Director Oscar F. Porter. "These students provide the solution to industry's need for well-trained professionals.
