Freeze Frame: Linemen Brave Winter Weather

Feb. 15, 2019
Linemen endure cold temperatures, snow and ice to keep the lights on for electric utility customers.

Ice, snow and sleet don't stand in the way of linemen restoring power. When the lights go out, power companies call upon their field crews to work in bitterly cold temperatures to get the power back on for their customers once again.

Since T&D World launched its new Instagram page, LinemenWorld, two weeks ago, several great photos of linemen restoring power have popped up in our feed. On Instagram, power companies are showing their appreciation for their line crews, who leave their families in the middle of the night, sometimes for weeks at a time, to help others. Through our new Instagram page, LinemenWorld, we have reposted these photos, which capture the spirit of line work in the wintertime.

Here in the Midwest, we are all ready for Old Man Winter to take his final bow and for Mother Spring to appear. With another snow storm on the way here in Kansas City, the home of the International Lineman's Rodeo and the T&D World offices, however, it looks like we are stuck with more snow and cold temperatures.

As we wait for the ice to melt and the sun to shine once again, however, we want to thank all of our readers for their hard work and dedication to the line trade. While we are covering the industry, you are out in the elements keeping our homes and offices warm and comfortable.

Also, thank you for following LinemenWorld, which just hit 100 followers. To help us to hit our next milestone of 200 followers, create a free account on Instagram or if you are already on it, just search for LinemenWorld and hit "follow." We would love to have you as part of the T&D World virtual online community of linemen.

If you have some great photos of your linemen in action on winter storms, email Amy Fischbach, Field Editor, with a vertical high-resolution color photo, a one-paragraph caption and the name of the photographer. We may feature it in our full-page photo department, Parting Shot, in the Electric Utility Operations section of the print magazine or include it on our Instagram page.
