As part of their shared commitment to education and community well-being, LUMA and the American Red Cross recently joined forces to host educational talks at the Carlos Escobar López Municipal Center in Loíza in Puerto Rico.

The event featured a presentation on electrical safety delivered by LUMA personnel and a second session led by the American Red Cross focused on emergency preparedness, especially during hurricane season.

During the event, more than 40 residents received valuable information on how to respond to emergencies involving power lines, accident prevention measures, and safety tips for protecting themselves during severe weather events. The American Red Cross complemented the program by offering key strategies to help families prepare before, during and after a natural disaster. Attendees also had the opportunity to ask questions, share concerns and learn how to prevent accidents.

“Education saves lives. That is why these initiatives not only strengthen the resilience of our people but also bring us closer to the communities we serve. In Loíza, we have found highly committed partners, such as the mayor and local community leaders, who share our mission to educate and prepare people to face any emergency with greater safety and confidence,” said Melissa Pueyo, LUMA Director of Key Accounts.

Participants received bags of non-perishable food donated by LUMA employees, which were handed out at the end of the event. Initiatives like this highlight LUMA’s ongoing commitment to education and wellness, energy stewardship, economic development and recovery, LUMA’s three community pillars.

Loíza Mayor Julia Nazario added, “We are grateful to LUMA and the American Red Cross for bringing this educational effort to our community. Education and prevention are powerful tools to protect our families. Through events like this, our residents not only receive useful information but also feel supported and accompanied as they prepare for the challenges of hurricane season. These efforts help us be better prepared for any emergency.”
