As part of its efforts to develop the next generation of energy industry professionals, LUMA launched its 2025 Summer Internship Program with the participation of more than 80 university students from local institutions including Caribbean University, Universidad Ana G. Méndez, the University of Puerto Rico – Mayagüez and Río Piedras campuses, Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, Universidad del Sagrado Corazón and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico.

This diverse group of interns from eight local universities will be integrated into several key areas of the company, including engineering and capital programs. Over the coming weeks, students will have the opportunity to participate in real-world projects, learn from industry experts, and visit facilities such as LUMA College — contributing directly to the transformation of Puerto Rico’s electric system. Interns will also support initiatives related to transmission and distribution, telecommunications, microgrids, substation construction and smart meters.

Since the launch of the internship program, LUMA has impacted more than 300 students, supporting their academic and professional development. This initiative is part of strategic partnerships with local universities that allow students to complement their academic training with valuable hands-on experience. Additionally, the program promotes talent retention on the island, which is essential to the ongoing reconstruction of the electric grid.

“Our summer internship program reflects our mission to invest in Puerto Rico’s energy future by integrating talented students who bring a fresh perspective and a strong commitment to remaining on the island and contributing to the restoration of the electric system,” said Juan Rodríguez, LUMA’s Senior Vice President of Capital Programs.

LUMA will continue strengthening these efforts through new professional development opportunities for university students, reaffirming its role as an ally of education, innovation and progress on the island.
