SMUD to Present Women in Skills Trades Day Celebration

June 14, 2023
SMUD will offer dozens of hands-on activities and demonstrations in skilled trades within the utility sector.

Women in Skilled Trades Day creates opportunities for participants to explore career paths where they have been underrepresented. For SMUD's inaugural event, the utility is organizing a day of hands-on activities at the Sacramento Power Academy from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 17. Up to 200+ prospective clean energy workers; public safety officials; workforce organizations; SMUD representatives and other community members and nonprofits will be in attendance.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Understand how they can have a future in the skilled trades at SMUD,
  • Perform different skilled trades tasks,
  • Learn about requirements for the different trades careers at SMUD,
  • Interact with partners who can provide support in the pursuit of these careers and
  • Meet the folks at SMUD who perform this work every day.

Women in Skilled Trades Day connects participants with clean energy professionals who will explain various job functions through hands-on demos, including:

  • Wiring of electrical boards,
  • Use of laser range finder and geospatial data collection devices,
  • Manhole entry and removal of insulation from cables,
  • Line-worker challenges in climbing prep and equipment testing, and
  • Ground and hot tool overview.

SMUD workgroups represented at the event will include electricians, stationary engineers, carpenters, lineworkers, fleet mechanics, customer service field representatives, cable networking, power generation, power system operators, vegetation management, warehouse operations and more. Representatives with SMUD, Northern California Construction Training (NCCT), Sacramento Fire Department, Sacramento Police Department, Single Mom Strong, Tradeswomen, Inc. and NorCal Carpenters Union will also offer career guidance and employment resources.

While this event is geared toward adults, children ages 15+ are welcome to participate. Children ages 15-17 must have a guardian present. Free child care for ages 2-12 will be provided by EmpowerME Preschool and Childcare. On the day of the event, participants must wear close-toed shoes or work boots, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt.
