Eversource Line Crews Respond to Christmas Storm

Dec. 28, 2020
Linemen spent time away from their families on Christmas to get the lights back on following a Connecticut rain and wind storm.

Following a Christmas rain and wind storm, Eversource’s team of lineworkers worked nonstop to restore power to customers. Hundreds of line and tree crews made necessary repairs to the electric system in western Connecticut to get the remaining customers affected by the storm back online. As of 11 a.m on Dec. 26., the energy company had restored power to more than 59,000 customers since the storm began. At that time, about 3,000 Eversource customers in western Connecticut remained without power as a result of the storm.

“We recognize how difficult it is to be without power, especially at Christmas,” said Eversource President of Regional Electric Operations Craig Hallstrom. “We’re at the stage of the restoration where the final outages often call for extensive repairs that are labor-intensive and time-consuming. In some cases, we’ll need several crews working most of the day to repair the damage at one location and that will bring power back to only one customer. Our massive team – in the field and behind the scenes – is fully committed to getting power restored to the remaining customers today. I personally want to thank the men and women working in the field and behind the scenes – many of whom gave up Christmas with their families – to work on this restoration. They’ve done a tremendous job.”

Eversource Chairman, President and CEO Jim Judge said the damaging winds and heavy rains with the storm caused damage to the electric system and caused widespread power outages in 117 of the 149 towns it serves.

“We know the timing of this storm couldn’t have been worse as people are trying to celebrate the Christmas holiday,” he says. "We’re bringing in crews from our New Hampshire and Massachusetts teams to help with the restoration in Connecticut. Our employees – many of whom sacrificed their holiday – are committed to working around-the-clock until all of our customers affected by this storm have their power back. I want to thank the extraordinary efforts of our lineworkers and team members who are out in the weather today, away from their families on Christmas.”
