Cutover to ACS' Connex 30 solution marks a milestone as the first RIG replacement to go online in ISO-NE market

ATLANTA – June 2, 2009 — Advanced Control Systems (ACS) and Northeast Generation Services (NGS) announced cutover of the first RIG replacement last week at NGS' plant in Hartford, CT. ACS worked closely with engineers at NGS, a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities, to deliver and install the customized solution on an accelerated schedule. According to ISO New England this represents a milestone as the first RIG replacement from any supplier to be placed into production. Under new specifications for the exchange of data with its market participants, ISO-NE has mandated that all existing obsolete Remote Intelligent Gateway (RIG) devices be replaced by February 2010.

In addition to the strict design and performance requirements defined in the ISO-NE specification, the ACS solution deployed at NGS also required some custom functionality. ACS provided specialized automated base load and peak power calculations for the generators and delivered enhanced alarm and historical data features. In addition, the RIG replacement is configured for two-way communication with the Connecticut Valley Electric Exchange (CONVEX), which operates the units for NGS. ACS' replacement solution, based upon its field-proven Connex 30 substation controller, also includes a touch-screen HMI for viewing RIG status as well as asset summary and history information.

Advanced Control Systems expects additional units to be in production very soon; as it has other RIG replacements installed and still others in various stages of delivery with other ISO-NE market participants.

“We have found the RIG owners to be very receptive to our full-service replacement approach, and they appreciate the technology and experience that we bring to the table,” remarked ACS CEO José Barbosa. “Being the first vendor to bring a RIG replacement online shows market participants that they can be confident in the selection of our Connex 30 solution.”
