Howard W. Penrose

Howard W Penrose, Ph.D., CMRP, is the president of MotorDoc LLC and the immediate past chair of SMRP.  He presently serves as the chair of the SMRP Smart Grid, Infrastructure and Cybersecurity sub-committee of the Government Relations Committee.  He is a past senior research engineer for the University of Illinois’ Energy Resources Center and past Chair of the Chicago Section of IEEE as well as serving on the Power Engineering Society Materials Sub-Committee and IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society Standards Group since 1993.  He has advised the US Department of Energy on energy efficiency and is involved in the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) in relation to generator and powertrain reliability.  He has also been involved in flywheel motor/generator design for Temporal Power and supporting existing flywheel sites for Convergent Energy in Canada and the USA, the hybrid GM Tahoe and Volt, the John Deere hybrid 644 and 944 construction tractors as well as an expert witness for Toyota, Honda, Mitsuba and Nidec in Federal International Trade Commission cases in relation to hybrid vehicle technology.  Dr. Penrose received 5 UAW-GM People Make Quality Happen awards for his work on facility and corporate energy and reliability programs for General Motors (2005-2009) and is an advisor for substation electrical reliability and safety programs for West Fraser Canada.  He may be contacted at [email protected].  For more information on SMRP, go to SMRP.org.
