Siemens will implement coordination of two New York State sites -- Rochester Gas & Electric (RGE) and New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) -- into a single system with the Spectrum Power Energy Management System (EMS). The client is Iberdrola, S.A., one of the leading private electric utilities worldwide and the parent company of NYSEG and RGE. The project is scheduled to ship and install in 2013.

Iberdrola USA recognized that NYSEG and RGE required the replacement of their legacy platforms. The replacement will address technical obsolescence, utilizing commercial off-the-shelf products that operate as an integrated system and increase operational efficiency.

The new system adheres to NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) CIP (Critical Infrastructure Protection) and Reliability standards, and NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) standards and recommendations. To improve operational efficiency, the NYSEG and RGE models will be combined into a single network model as part of this project.

Spectrum Power is a message-based SCADA platform, with application functionality (such as network analysis and historical archiving) provided by separate components. This architecture enables a system to be tailored to meet a utility's current needs, and expands it as those needs grow. Spectrum Power is integrated into a powerful, end-to-end range of products and solutions which allows swift adaptation of electric power systems to new conditions.
