The Surge Protective Devices Committee hosted a paper and Q&A session on Wednesday, May 9, involving the advancement of technologies for the design and testing of line surge arrestors, non-gapped line arrestors, and externally gapped line arrestors.
First, the highly anticipated, recently released IEC Standard 60099-8 on Surge Arrestors (Part 8: Metaloxide surge arresters with external series gap for overhead transmission/distribution lines of a.c. systems above 1 kV) was examined in detail. This presentation provided in-depth information on the testing of these devices and the proper application of the standard. Secondly, new advancements in the area of ultra-high gradient Zinc Oxide technology, which allow for the design and development of smaller, more compact LSAs was presented. With operating voltages of up to 600V/mm, the development of these devices was discussed, including methods of controlling the grain size and optimizing the manufacturing process of the ZnO element.
