Leveraging eSIM Technology to Improve SCADA Resiliency
Learn how utilities can improve grid reliability by enhancing SCADA communications using eSIM technology to access multiple networks and increase overall connectivity.
Many utilities depend on cellular communications—both public and private—to provide the connectivity required for grid operations. However, cellular networks were originally designed with a focus on mobility, not maximum availability, therefore network resiliency was a secondary consideration. As a result, typical cellular availability hovers around 99.9%, which may fall short of utility-grade expectations.
This is particularly critical for utility SCADA systems, which are essential for maintaining high grid availability since even the most advanced SCADA solutions can't function effectively without highly available communications.
To address this limitation, utilities can adopt emerging GSMA eSIM standards, which allow devices to access multiple cellular networks. By enabling fallback connectivity to secondary networks, utilities can significantly enhance overall communications availability.
