Hydro One has announced Route 2 as the preferred option for the proposed St. Clair Transmission Line after a comprehensive evaluation of five alternatives.
Route 2 was chosen due to its utilization of existing transmission corridors for 80% of the route, including upgrades to an existing transmission line. This alternative minimizes the impact on Indigenous communities, the natural environment, agricultural lands, and operations. Additionally, it involves an upgrade to the Wallaceburg Transformer Station, enhancing transmission reliability and resilience for the Wallaceburg area. Once operational, the St. Clair Transmission Line will provide sufficient clean energy to power a city the size of Waterloo, fostering economic growth in the region.
To determine the preferred route, Hydro One gathered environmental and technical data and sought input from various stakeholders, including Indigenous communities, residents, government agencies, interest groups, and businesses. The company will continue engaging with residents and collaborating closely with property owners to keep them informed about the project's progress.
According to the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), energy demand in southwest Ontario is projected to quadruple by 2035.The St. Clair Transmission Line is part of a network of infrastructure projects across the region aimed at unlocking Ontario's economic electrification potential to mitigate climate change and meet the anticipated energy demand. To promote reconciliation, Hydro One is offering proximate First Nations affected by the project a 50% equity stake in the transmission line component and is committed to advancing the project through partnership.
The line is expected to be operational by 2028.
