Balfour Beatty Wins £5million Contract to Install New Style Conductors in West Cumbria, UK

Balfour Beatty has been awarded two new overhead line projects with Electricity North West, worth approximately £5.3million.

Balfour Beatty has been awarded two new overhead line projects with Electricity North West, worth approximately £5.3million.

Balfour Beatty will be installing a new type of composite cored electricity conductor, the first time this has been used by Electricity North West. The ACCC conductor has a number of advantages over the traditional all-aluminium or steel-reinforced conventional conductors. In particular, it increases the network capacity to allow for existing and future wind farm connections on the existing 33-kV line without the need to build a higher voltage replacement line.

The first scheme will run through Cumbria from Broughton Moor to Aspatria and the second between Stainburn and Embleton. Both projects involve the replacement of over 60 pylons, the refurbishment of 29 km of existing insulators and fittings and the installation of the new ACCC conductor.

Tim Groom, head of major projects for Electricity North West, said: “This is an essential project and it shows our commitment to improving and upgrading the power network to ensure we keep the lights on for our customers in Cumbria.

“We’re delighted to have awarded this major contract to Balfour Beatty and we’re looking forward to working alongside them over the coming months.”

Neil Kirkby, managing director of Balfour Beatty’s Power Transmission and Distribution business said: “We are delighted to be working with Electricity North West to install this innovative new conductor. This is another example of where Balfour Beatty works in partnership with our client to deliver the right solutions to our energy challenges.”
