The existing 132-kV transmission line between Powerlink's Ingham and Tully substations is more than 50 years old, and requires replacement to ensure the continued reliability of high voltage electricity supply to Far North Queensland, Australia. As a result, Powerlink is constructing a replacement 275/132-kV transmission line. The replacement line will cater for future growth in electricity demand for the communities of Ingham, Cardwell, Tully and surrounding areas.
Status
Construction of the replacement transmission line has commenced, after all necessary environmental and planning approvals were received. Powerlink will construct the replacement transmission line in two stages: Cardwell to Tully, then Ingham to Cardwell. This two-stage approach will allow one line to be kept in service at all times to maintain a reliable supply of high voltage electricity to Cardwell.
In 2008, Powerlink appointed specialist environmental consultant RPS (formerly Natural Solutions) to undertake an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project. As part of the EIA, RPS prepared a Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in July 2010, following input from the community and other stakeholders.
Powerlink also prepared environmental plans, including a Mahogany Glider Management Plan, Vegetation Management Plan and Mahogany Glider Offsets Strategy, to meet requirements of the Commonwealth’s Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Act 1999 (EPBC).
Construction is scheduled for completion in late 2013.
