New Field-Installable Kit Converts Quadrant Clamps into Full-Tension Deadends for ACSS Conductor
A new hardware solution is helping utilities adapt existing infrastructure to meet the demands of modern transmission systems—without costly replacements or system outages. A field-installable kit known as the Q2D from Classic Connectors is enabling standard quadrant clamps—traditionally used as non-electrical anchors—to function as permanent, high-temperature, full-tension deadends on ACSS conductors.
The innovation addresses a longstanding limitation: quadrant clamps are not full-tension rated for ACSS applications due to insufficient grip on the conductor’s steel core. The Q2D kit overcomes this by integrating three key components—a Mechanical Anchor Kit (MAK), a Primary Transfer Connector (PTC), and a Jumper Terminal Extrusion (JTE)—into a system that can be installed in minutes.
Designed to operate at temperatures exceeding 250°C, the system meets ANSI C119.4 Class AA standards. For high-voltage applications (above 138 kV), optional corona shields are available to prevent corona discharge and maintain system integrity.
Ease of installation is central to the Q2D’s design. Each component is preloaded with a proprietary conductive compound to enhance electrical performance, and torque-limiting fasteners ensure consistent compression and contact. The system is built to withstand full-tension mechanical loads and can be installed on both energized and de-energized lines.
