Substation Electrician III John Bartsch, who has been with Austin Energy for 10 years, helps to disassemble a transmission structure as part of an upgrade at a substation in Austin.
The footprint of the Seaholm substation near downtown Austin is being made smaller to allow for redevelopment of the area, including a new central public library for the city. The work, which includes removing older equipment at the substation and relocating transmission lines, is being done in stages. The substation sits next to the decommissioned Seaholm Power Plant, an art deco 1950s-style plant that is being preserved and also will be redeveloped for other uses that benefit the public.
