The technical panel session, "HVDC System Solutions: Read Me First," opened yesterday with a full house, according to Gene Wolf, official IEEE PES blogger. The session, held yesterday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., featured Brian Johnson from the University of Idaho as the chair and was part of the transmission and distribution system planning track.

There has been a renewed interest in the application of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission schemes in recent years. The session introduced fundamental concepts of HVDC transmission schemes, but not through a deluge of complicated circuits.

Among the presentations were a discussion of what HVDC schemes can and cannot do along with an overview of HVDC fundamentals. Another presentation included an overview of some existing HVDC applications, centered on the Pacific HVDC Intertie, with discussion of the benefits of these projects.

Presenters also discussed 800-kV HVDC transmission systems. The presentations were tutorial in nature and did not presume familiarity with power electronics.

Following are the list of presenters (contact IEEE PES for proceedings information):

08TD0776 HVDC Transmission Overview
M. BAHRMAN, ABB

08TD0382 800-kV HVDC Transmission Systems
S. MARUVADA, Consultant

08TD0601 Advances in HVDC Technology as applied to the Pacific HVDC Intertie
W. LITZENBERGER, Retired

08TD0361 Xiangjiaba-Shanghai Highest Power of UHVDC ready for implementation
Q. YUAN, State Grid Co. of China
