Update Your Lineman Training Program

April 5, 2016

Steel poles are becoming an increasingly important component of a distribution system, offering benefits over wood poles to utility companies that deploy them and to lineworkers who install and maintain them. Today, over 600 electric utilities are using steel distribution poles.

Through design, a steel pole is a lighter product — at least 30 percent lighter than wood. Lighter weight can reduce the cost of transportation, handling and construction. It also simplifies remote location installations. As more utility companies implement steel poles into their systems and more colleges add steel training to their curriculums, industry assistance may be needed to ease the learning curve.

Training with steel poles is essential to helping students, apprentices, and veteran linemen gain valuable skills they will use right away on the job. To expedite this training, the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), Institute for Safety in Powerline Construction (ISPC), Omaha Metropolitan Community College, and T&D PowerSkills LLC have worked together to develop training programs specifically for students and journeyman/apprentice linemen.

For the past 15 years, SMDI has assisted colleges, training centers, electric utilities, and various electric utility associations by providing complimentary training to qualified organizations. The training is set up in two separate formats—one specifically designed for students and instructors, and one developed for electric utilities, apprentice programs, and utility associations.

The topics include:

Steel Pole Operations

  • Overview and benefits
  • Joining multiple sections
  • Framing and setting
  • Climbing
  • Energized line work
  • Handling, loading and deployment
  • Grounding

Steel Pole Engineering

  • Engineering, design, and testing
  • Performance
  • Manufacturing and quality control
  • Maintenance and inspection
  • Corrosion risk and mitigation
  • Durability
  • Sustainable benefits

This complimentary training is available in several formats depending on your organizations needs:

  1. 1-Hour Online Courses
  2. Comprehensive Training Kits
  3. On-Site Classroom and Hands-On Training Workshops
