Q: What are the major research trends in power system protection?
Haneen Aburub, Wichita State University, United States

A: Power protection field is alive and well. This part of the power industry is as dynamic, or perhaps even more dynamic, than the other power product/systems industries. The main research trends include: communications, centralized versus decentralized decision making for protection versus control of power systems, big data (relays already generate A LOT of data), cloud computing, cybersecurity, physical cybersecurity, interoperability and open protocols, just to name a few.
