Factors in Submarine Cable Installation

We have a number of recognized transmission and distribution experts serving on our board of "Grid Masters." Q: What are the main factors to consider during a submarine cable installation and are there any differences in the installation practices of a DC and AC submarine cable?

Eddy Ebruke

A: The main factors to consider during submarine cable installation are length, depth, temperature, bottom conditions, bottom profile, burial requirements, protection requirements, crossings, restricted areas such as marine sanctuaries or anchorages, and landing sites.  Although there are different electrical parameters and design requirements between ac and dc cables, there is no appreciable difference in installation technique.
