Salt River Project requires that all of its linemen wear long-sleeved flame-retardant shirts and pants when working within 6 ft of exposed energized conductors or equipment with the potential for an electrical flashover. Robert Lake, an SRP lineman, protects himself against hazards with flame-retardant clothing and other personal protective equipment while hanging an insulator in Tempe, Arizona. He and his crew were working on a maintenance project to improve clearances between 230-kV and 69-kV lines, which are joint attached on a structure. Lake and lineman Austin Beckman flew by helicopter to access the pole in Tempe Town Lake, and the ground crew traveled by boat to reach their destination.
