KEYTEX Energy has been awarded a contract to take part in FirstEnergy Corp.'s Commercial/Industrial Demand Response Program, which will be available from June 1 to Sept. 30, 2012. This program is authorized under Pennsylvania's Act 129 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Program.
FirstEnergy's Pennsylvania utilities, which include Pennsylvania Electric Co. (Penelec), Metropolitan Edison Co. (MetEd), Pennsylvania Power Co. (Penn Power), and West Penn Power Co., have launched this program to reduce peak demand for electricity, which is a major goal of Pennsylvania's Act 129 of 2008.
Under this contract, KEYTEX Energy will recruit commercial, institutional, industrial, and governmental participants to curtail their electricity usage during some of the hottest days this summer. In return, qualifying customers can be paid $500 to $620 an hour (per 1,000 kW curtailed) for as many as 50 hours this summer.
