SEL Debuts Engineering and Quality Innovations in San Luis Potosí, Mexico

img_2543.jpgSAN LUIS POTOSÍ, MEXICO March 3, 2009 Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) announced the first design and quality innovations from its engineering, manufacturing, and service facility in San Luis Potosí (SLP), Mexico.

The center focuses on the design and manufacture of integrated systems, control enclosures, and panels for the Mexican and international markets. Through creative design concepts, quality innovations new to panel building, and unmatched delivery times, SEL Mexico is committed to revolutionizing the integration, panel, and control enclosure industries.

I was impressed with both engineering and manufacturing at the SLP plant, said Jimmy Kilpatrick of Southern Company's Transmission Design and Construction group. A combination of modern technology and efficient processes combines to make a first-class operation.

Functional testing processes and engineering talent in our new center of excellence in San Luis Potosí set us apart from others in the industry, said Luis D'Acosta, SEL Mexico general director. SEL Mexico is taking the experience learned through 25 years of identifying, measuring, and improving our processes at SEL and applying the same techniques to our systems, panel, and enclosure facility.

POWERCORE-M™, a turnkey substation control system with space-saving enclosures that can be distributed around the substation yard, is one of the first solutions to debut. Available for generation, transmission, and distribution applications, POWERCORE-M includes all communications, automation, protection, and control equipment for new installations or for replacement of existing control houses. It requires less maintenance, has a smaller footprint, lowers costs, and decreases environmental impact. Using the POWERCORE-M system will speed approvals because it is not considered a house by building authorities.

Quality and design innovations are also part of the panels designed and manufactured at SEL Mexico for customers around the world. A chemical testing lab ensures consistent, durable paint results and performs various tests to ensure long-term product durability. With quality process standards for panel drawings and wiring, the facility commits to providing customers with the highest quality, lowest lead-time, and best overall design in the industry. SEL Mexico incorporates protection and communications solutions manufactured in SEL's Pullman, Washington, facility into the panels.
