The Top 10 Most Costly Atlantic Hurricanes

Aug. 30, 2021
Historically, the Atlantic hurricane season has done billions of dollars in damage for every named storm, with a few causing hundreds of billions in damage.

Hurricane Ida has become the second most intense hurricane to strike Louisiana on record, only behind Hurricane Katrina, and tied for the strongest landfall in the state by maximum winds with Hurricane Laura in 2020 and the 1856 Last Island hurricane. It may very well make this list after all is said and done.

So far, nearly 1.2 million electricity customers are without power as a result of Ida in Louisiana and Mississippi, with the bulk of the outages in Louisiana.

2020's Hurricane Laura threatened to break the top 10 but ended up at 15th so far, just behind Hurricane Hugo in 1989, according to NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information.

Here is a list of the top 10 costliest Atlantic hurricanes.
