Georgia Power announced that Unit 4 at the Vogtle nuclear expansion project near Waynesboro, Georgia, has not only generated electricity but is also synchronized and connected to the electric grid, as part of an ongoing startup testing.
Operators will increase reactor power to 100 percent for electricity generation while performing tests at various power levels. Vogtle Unit 4 will be commercially operational on completing startup testing and the unit’s availability for reliable dispatch. The in-service date for Unit 4 is projected during Q2 2024.
The new Vogtle units deliver clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy to Georgia Power’s 2.7 million customers. Each of the new units are capable of producing enough electricity to power an estimated 500,000 homes and businesses while operational.
Southern Nuclear is operating the new units on behalf of the co-owners namely Georgia Power, Oglethorpe Power, MEAG Power and Dalton Utilities.
