WEBINAR

Engineering a Layered Technology Strategy for Utility Wildfire Mitigation

As wildfire risk expands across regions and seasons, utilities need a layered approach that combines prevention, early detection, protection, and emergency response to strengthen grid resilience. This webinar will explore practical strategies for reducing ignition risk, limiting fault energy, hardening distribution systems, and integrating technologies such as high-impedance fault detection, weather monitoring, and CAL FIRE-compliant equipment into comprehensive wildfire mitigation plans.

Wildfire risk is expanding across regions and seasons, increasing the regulatory, financial and reliability pressures facing electric utilities. Because every system has different environmental conditions, infrastructure and operational requirements, effective mitigation requires more than a single solution. Utilities need a layered strategy that combines wildfire prevention, early detection and response.

Designed for utility standards engineers, wildfire program managers and other professionals responsible for grid resilience, this webinar will examine how utilities can evaluate and combine mitigation approaches across overhead and underground distribution systems. Attendees will explore practical considerations for reducing ignition risk, limiting fault energy and improving the detection and isolation of potentially hazardous faults.

Attendees will learn how to:

• Structure a layered mitigation strategy around prevention, detection and emergency response

• Evaluate grid-hardening approaches, including covered equipment and undergrounding

• Apply protection technologies that reduce fault energy, sparks and debris

• Incorporate high-impedance fault detection, weather monitoring and operational measures

• Consider CAL FIRE-compliant equipment within wildfire mitigation plans and standards

You will leave with a practical framework for assessing available strategies and identifying the combination of engineering, protection and operational measures best aligned with their utility’s risk profile and wildfire mitigation objectives.
