KEMA Power Test High Voltage Laboratory’s New Investment

Feb. 22, 2024
Since the plan's inception, the lab has restored many high-voltage services, including lightning impulse (up to 1,400 kV), switching impulse (up to 900 kV), dry and wet power frequency withstand tests, induced voltage test.

One year ago, KEMA Labs, the CESI Group TIC Division, embarked on a plan to renew its high voltage laboratory in Chalfont, Pennsylvania. This initiative aimed to enhance high voltage testing services, complementing existing short circuit client services with dielectric tests, and drawing new clients seeking stand-alone dielectric testing.

Since the plan's inception, the lab has restored many high-voltage services, including lightning impulse (up to 1,400 kV), switching impulse (up to 900 kV), dry and wet power frequency withstand tests, induced voltage test, and more, adhering to various standards such as IEEE and IEC. KEMA Labs in Chalfont is also ISO 17025 certified as an independent test laboratory.

Key upgrades included replacing the series resonant test set, developing partial discharge and RIV measurement capabilities, and installing an automatic grounding system for the lightning impulse generator.

The acquisition of a preowned Haefely resonant test system, which offers higher ampacity and advanced automatic controls, enhances the lab’s capacity, especially for high voltage cable testing, a field with increasing global demand.

Moreover, KEMA Labs invested in the Omicron MPD-800 system for partial discharge and RIV measurements, a decision informed by consultations with other CESI Group high voltage laboratories. This new capability has already led to successful projects and will continue to open doors for clients seeking comprehensive dielectric type tests.

Additionally, the lab’s lightning impulse generator, essential for routine and type tests, received an important safety upgrade with a new automatic grounding system. This ensures safe discharge of residual electric charge before personnel approach the generator, improving safety and reliability. Designed and built by JMX High Voltage and installed by KEMA staff, this system represents a significant enhancement.

With these and future strategic investments, KEMA Labs’s high voltage laboratory in Chalfont is well-equipped to grow and better serve the North American market for high voltage testing services.
