Duke Energy Florida Employs Smart Technology to Combat Power Outages During Hurricane Season

May 30, 2023
Self-healing technology saves thousands of hours in outage time and boosts restoration efforts.

Duke Energy Florida is reminding customers about the benefits of its smart, self-healing technology as the state enters another hurricane season. This technology automatically detects power outages and swiftly reroutes power to restore service faster or prevent outages altogether, like how a GPS reroutes traffic during an accident.

In the previous year, this technology helped avoid approximately 513,000 extended customer power outages in Florida, saving more than 3.8 million hours of total lost outage time.

Moreover, self-healing technology assists field crews in efficiently restoring power after major storms, reducing outage impacts, and freeing up resources for restoring power in other areas.

Currently, Duke Energy Florida serves over 60% of its customers with some form of self-healing or automated restoration technology, reflecting a 45% increase compared to 2020.

Over time, self-healing technology has delivered significant benefits to Florida customers during major outages caused by severe weather on Duke Energy’s system. The energy company aims to have at least 80% of its customers served by some form of self-healing technology in the next few years.
