IEEE Approves Revision of Standard for Testing High-Voltage Circuit Breakers

The IEEE Standards Association Standards Board has approved a standard test procedure for AC high-voltage circuit breakers.

The IEEE Standards Association Standards Board has approved a standard test procedure for AC high-voltage circuit breakers. It has also approved a project to revise its guide for high-voltage circuit breakers to harmonize it with changes made to in other standards.

IEEE C37.09b – Standard Test Procedure for AC High-Voltage Circuit Breakers Rated on a Symmetrical Current Basis Amendment 2: To Change the Description of Transient Recovery Voltage for Harmonization with IEC 62271-100 – amends the procedure in IEEE PC37.09 to harmonize it with an international standard. The international standard, IEC 62271-100, applies to the same type of AC high-voltage circuit breakers rated on a symmetrical current basis. This revision continues an effort that first began in the 1950s to harmonize requirements in the IEEE standards with those of IEC.

Equipment manufacturers will benefit from the revision because one set of tests will be applicable to both IEEE and IEC standards. Users and specifiers of ac high-voltage circuit breakers rated on a symmetrical current basis will benefit because a consistent method of application can be employed.

The revision project approved by the board, IEEE PC37.010 – Application Guide for AC High-Voltage Circuit Breakers > 1000 Vac Rated on a Symmetrical Current Basis – will address AC high-voltage circuit breakers (rated above 1,000 Vac) that have been rated on a symmetrical current basis.
