Rwanda Advances Electrification with Three High-Voltage Substations

Dec. 1, 2020
Efacec substations to further Rwanda's economic and social development by distributing power to the country's rural areas.

The electrical distribution network of the Republic of Rwanda has reached a voltage level of 220 kV for the first time with the installation of three high-voltage substations by Efacec. These infrastructures will further Rwanda's economic and social development by distributing power to the country's rural areas, and help the African nation realize its goal of full electrification of the country by 2023.

In 2017, Efacec was chosen by the winning consortium of the international tender launched by the Republic of Rwanda for the construction of three new 220-kV substations. The company was to implement the project of engineering, supply, supervision, and commissioning of the three new substations on a turn-key basis. The project consisted of three substations — SE Mamba 220-kV, SE Rwabusoro 220-/110-/11-kV, and SE Bugesera 220-/110-/11-kV.

Efacec was responsible for carrying out all electrical studies, including selectivity studies; integration of the three new substations in the dispatch; schematic design and configuration of all elements of the command, control, and protection system; supply of various equipment (high-, medium-, and low-voltage, SCCP, telecommunications, chargers, and batteries); sea and land transport of equipment to Rwanda; supervision of assembly work; general commissioning of the three substations, and assistance to put them into service. The equipment used in the command, control, and protection system and in the central system was mostly made by Efacec.

This construction work will be fundamental to transport the 80-MW produced at Hakan Mamba's Power Station to the national electricity grid, to supply the new International Airport and the Bugesera Industrial Park. The project is expected to make significant contribution so that by 2023, 100% of the nation's population is connected to Rwanda's electricity grid.
